Rotarians,

Well, the final figures are in for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and it looks as though I'll get soaked with a bucket of ice water later this week.  It also looks as if the weather turns much cooler Thursday, the day of my soaking.  Just my luck!  Konza Club contributed a total of $2,784 to the ALS Association while our Manhattan Rotary Club contributed $4,000 for a total of $6,784!  Not bad for a 2 week challenge!!  Obviously the point is not which club raised more, but the fact that we came together as Rotarians and accomplished something very good in a short amount of time.  Even though I'm feeling sorry for myself right now anticipating my consequences, I'm realistic enough to know some of you are enjoying this much more than I am and don't feel sorry for me at all.  In fact, this week I had an email from a member suggesting we add rock salt to the ice water to make it colder, as that seems to work when making homemade ice cream.  So why not try this for the Ice Bucket Challenge?  I've determined th at would not pass the Four Way Test, so it has no place at a Rotary function.  That's my final answer.

Monday morning Lisa Sisley, President of Konza Club, and myself were interviewed by Cathy Dawes of KMAN radio regarding this challenge.  Other local media outlets including the Manhattan Mercury and TV stations have been notified of our social event this Thursday evening.  Our clubs will meet at Powercat Grill on west Anderson at 530pm for a time of socializing and eventually my soaking.  Our clubs will provide appetizers and we encourage all of you to bring your spouse or a guest.  Many thanks to the Fellowship Committee of Sam Gillespie, Keith Westervelt and Dan Devlin for arranging this social on very short notice and coordinating with the Konza Club.  Thanks also goes out to Chris Nolte, our club's Public Relations Chair, who has been involved in coordinating and arranging the media coverage.

Please consider getting involved in "Change The World" project this Sunday, October 5th.  Our club will distribute cold drinks to several work sites around the area.  Last year our efforts were very much appreciated.   Nearly 600 volunteers are expected to be out working on various projects and this is a great way for us to assist and gain exposure for our club and, more importantly, for Rotary.  Please contact Jeff Guether if you can give an hour of your time next Sunday to deliver drinks.

Don't forget this week, Walgreens will be at our meeting to administer flu shots for those interested.  If you have not completed a consent form, those will be available to you at the meeting.  I'm very grateful to club members Cassidi Green and Ken Gartner of Walgreens for providing this service to our club each year.

If you missed our program last week, you missed a good one.  Gary Hogsett of Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center gave a fascinating presentation on energy, costs of varying types of energy and  ideas for maximizing energy efficiencies.  An outstanding speaker, Gary was very humorous and informative.  If you missed his presentation and would like to see it, you can watch it on our club's website.

Another great program is in store for us this week as we will hear from Bruce Weber, Men's Basketball Head Coach.  I hope to see you for lunch this Thursday!
