My Fellow Rotarian;

Good afternoon!  The Holiday season is upon us with joy and sadness.  Sadness because one of our own passed away Sunday:  Charlie Hostetler, a community leader, a fellow Rotarian and Past President (and my former boss back in the 90’s).  I recall that whenever he attended Rotary his table filled quickly because you knew you would be entertained.  There will be a card circulating for you to sign expressing condolences to his family at this week’s meeting.

Tis’ the season of giving and there is so much joy when you give.  You will receive a letter from me shortly asking you to consider giving to the Rotary Foundation.  If each of us can give $100 we will easily surpass our goal and help those less fortunate.

After enduring Minnesota weather this past week today I feel like putting on shorts and a tee shirt because the outside temperature reached 40 degrees!  Woohoo!  Well it felt that way to me.

Last week, December started off strong with Bill Richter presenting our Rotary Inspiration focusing on the Rotary Foundation and the benefits your money does for those in need worldwide.  It then continued as new Rotarian Jared Hatesohl was introduced by past president Mark Queen.  Welcome Jared when you see him.

John Armbrust then took the podium to introduce Major General Paul Funk II, commanding general of the 1st Infantry.  His presentation was inspiring and I appreciated how he emphasized the fact that he commands your Army and his duty to preparing his kids to be ready to fight our country’s battles.  He invited us to tour Ft. Riley anytime and we may just take him up on that!  He also wasn’t afraid to answer some pointed questions from the audience.

At our next meeting our guest speaker will be Dr. Felipe Rosso one of our newest urologists and surgeons here in Manhattan.  Not sure what he is going to talk on but it will include robotic surgery.  As many of you know, he was my surgeon who 3 months ago performed a prostatectomy on me using robotic surgery.  Hopefully he doesn’t bring pictures of me!

And if your are planning ahead, December 19th will be our last meeting in 2013 and our program will be the ever popular Pops Choir from Manhattan High School.

Wishing you all the best this Holiday season.

Dick
