Greetings Rotarians,

It's hard to believe it's time again for the weekly email.  I'm not sure where all the time goes, but it does seem to go rather quickly.  Last week Dr. Bryan Pinkall, K State Music Professor, shared with us his experience as manager of performance operations and direction of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.  Pinkall's team earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Lighting Direction as a result of the production.  The ceremony involved more than 5,000 performers and was one of the largest artistic events in history and viewed by more than 3 billion people worldwide.  If you missed this program, it would be worth your time to view it on our club website as it was fascinating.  Many thanks to our Speakers Committee and chair Eric Higgins for the outstanding programs we have enjoyed over the past several months.

As fascinating as the program was, equally fascinating is our club members' intense desire to see your club President get a bucket of ice water dumped on him.  This will be the final week in which we are involved in an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with our fellow Rotarians of the Konza Club.  If you have not contributed yet, please either go online to www.alsa.org  and donate or bring your check payable to "ALS Association" to the meeting this week.  At the end of the week, both clubs will total donations and the "winning" club will offer their President as the recipient of the ice water dump.  Remember, we have a member willing to match 50 cents for every dollar donated, so please take advantage of this opportunity to leverage your donation.  If you donate online, please let me know so we can add your contribution to our club's total and get the match. As of today, we stand at $1,852.50 as a club.  A sincere thank you to all of those who have generously contributed.

Our Fellowship Planning Committee has been working hard, on short notice, to arrange a social with the Konza Club. Several of you have expressed an interest in meeting socially with the Konza Club and the Ice Bucket Challenge has provided the opportunity to do just that.  We are scheduled to meet for an after hours social on Thursday, October 2nd at 5:30pm at Powercat Sports Grill, 3011 Anderson Ave.    This will provide time for us to get better acquainted with fellow Rotarians in Manhattan.  We will also use this time together to conclude the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with the ice water dump.  Let's hope for really warm weather!  If anyone has scuba gear, specifically a wet suit, I would be more than willing to rent it for a day (Oct.2).  A big thank you to Keith Westervelt, Sam Gillespie and Dan Devlin for coordinating this event with our friends at the Konza Club.

Change The World Sunday is just around the corner, October 5th.  If you want to help with the distribution of drinks to approximately 600 workers around town, please contact Jeff Geuther who coordinates this effort for our club.  Thanks to Jeff for his work in this area.

October 2nd, Walgreens will provide flu shot vaccinations to club members at our meeting.  All you need to do is fill out a medical insurance information sheet in advance and Walgreens will take it from there! The sheets will be available on your tables at this week's meeting.  Many thanks to Ken Gartner and Cassidi Green of Walgreens for making this happen each year.

This week we will meet our first MHS Students of The Month for the 2014-2015 school year.  Our program will feature Gary Hogsett from Mid America Manufacturing Technology Center.  I hope to see you at lunch this Thursday and don't forget ALS!
